Social networking app Path is very popular in Indonesia, but we just recently got some hard data on how popular the app really is in the country: Indonesia is the third-biggest country in Path’s 12-million-person userbase worldwide. That fact was revealed by Andreas Bezamat-Homer (reported by Kompas), Path’s business manager, during the Sony Xperia Z Ultra launch in Jakarta yesterday.
He says that Indonesian users’s most popular activity on Path is sharing photos, followed by sharing videos and music. Andreas also noted that the Khong Guan biscuit meme is especially viral among Indonesian Path users (pictured at bottom of this post).
Entering the Indonesian market
Understanding that Indonesia is an important market for the US-based company, Path is looking to market its products more seriously in Indonesia. To kick-start its plans, Path is now working with Sony Mobile Communications Indonesia to pre-install the app on the brand new Xperia Z Ultra handsets.
Not only that, the company is also in talks with local telcos like XL Axiata, Telkomsel, and Indosat to help boost Path’s popularity in the country. This is done by offering interesting internet packages to help convince more users to try out the app. Telkomsel’s internet package, which allows user to unlimited use Opera Mini and chatting apps like KakaoTalk and Line, is a good cooperation example.
There are other ways the company is looking to earn money from the Indonesian market, including selling photo and video filters. Another thing that the team is looking at right now is rolling out localized stickers for the market. But those are still in planning stages and nothing is decided yet.
Indonesians are definitely very social folks. It’s going to be interesting to see how Indonesians will respond to Path’s upcoming plans for the country.
